Quick answer

A Chase check that has been deposited is not necessarily fully available for spending. For most consumer accounts, the current deposit agreement generally starts from next-business-day availability, but some checks can move to second-business-day availability and specified exceptions can delay the full amount as far as the seventh business day. Mobile QuickDeposit follows its own channel-specific timing, so first identify how the check was deposited.

Identify the exact scenario first

Confirm the deposit channel—banker/branch, ATM, mail, or Chase QuickDeposit—and the date Chase says it received the deposit. Then compare current balance with available balance and locate any deposit-hold notice or email. Mobile deposits may follow different service terms from teller or ATM deposits; check the channel on your receipt.

Published rules

For most accounts, Chase’s current deposit agreement says wires, electronic direct deposits and cash are generally available the day received, while other deposits are generally available on the first business day after receipt. Some check deposits may not be fully available until the second business day. Chase lists longer-delay conditions such as concern a check will not be paid, large aggregate check deposits, a redeposited returned check, repeated overdrafts, or an emergency; those exceptions can extend availability for the full check amount. Chase says it provides a hold notice when it delays availability under the policy.

Decision path

If the stated availability date has not passed, treat that date—not the posted balance—as the working deadline. If Chase changed the availability after deposit, look for the notice that explains the new date. If you used QuickDeposit, switch to the separate mobile-deposit workflow because Chase publishes an 11 p.m. ET mobile cutoff and additional-review language for that service.

What to do next

Keep the deposit receipt/hold notice. If the stated date passes and the money is still unavailable, contact Chase with the deposit amount, channel, receipt date and hold notice. If the dispute is about whether a legal/regulatory funds-availability rule was followed, preserve the written notice before escalating; do not rely only on a screenshot of the balance.

Important limits

Next-day availability and extended hold periods depend on the check, account and channel. Branch, ATM and mobile disclosures can differ. Early release by an employee is not guaranteed.

Evidence checklist before escalation

Save the deposit receipt, channel (branch/ATM/mail/QuickDeposit), date Chase received it, check amount, current and available balances, original/updated hold notice and promised availability date. If the bank changed the date, preserve both notices. This evidence distinguishes a normal published hold from a later unexplained extension.

FAQ and nearby scenarios

Why does the check show in activity but I cannot spend it? Crediting/ledger display can precede availability. Does the seventh-business-day possibility apply to every deposit? No; it belongs to specified delay circumstances. Was the check deposited by phone? Use the QuickDeposit page too, because the mobile cutoff/review flow is different. Should I redeposit the same check? No while Chase may still be processing it.

When another page is better

Use the mobile-deposit page when the image/endorsement/submission itself is the problem. Use account-restriction guidance when the entire account, not merely one deposit, is limited. Use complaint routing only after the bank’s stated availability window/notice no longer explains the situation.
